California :: Fictitious Business Name Renewal Solicitation

According to an alert released by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office, many business owners in the area are receiving official-looking renewal notices for their fictitious business names. These renewal notices intimate that fees of up to $139 are due, which is much higher than the filing fees charged by the office. In fact, the actual renewal filing fee for a fictitious business name statement is $26 for one business name and one registrant, and $5 for each additional business name/registrant—significantly lower than the amounts specified in these fraudulent solicitations.

To report fraudulent activity, business owners are asked to call the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer Affairs at 800.593.8222 or visit their website.
