California :: Proposed Amendments to State Bar MCLE Rules

The State Bar of California Board of Trustees’ Member Oversight Committee recently authorized a circulation period for public comment on proposed amendments to the minimum continuing legal education (MCLE) requirements. The proposed changes would alter compliance requirements for both individual members and MCLE providers. One of the proposed changes is to increase the number of required MCLE hours. Currently, attorneys are required to complete 25 hours of approved credit every three years; whereas the proposed amendments would raise it to 36 hours every three years. The amendments also seek to clarify member requirements, expand specialty requirement definitions and raise provider standards.

For more on the proposed amendments, visit the State Bar’s website. Comments regarding the proposed amendments should be emailed to Ms. Laila Bartlett ( by September 6, 2013.
